How is income tax calculated for a Belgian indépendant?

As a self-employed person in Belgium you are taxed under the personal income tax (impôt des personnes physiques) on your net professional income, which is your turnover minus deductible business expenses and social contributions. The tax is progressive, applying rising rates to successive slices of income rather than one flat rate to the whole amount.

The 2026 brackets are:

  • 25% on income up to €16,320
  • 40% on income from €16,320 to €28,800
  • 45% on income from €28,800 to €49,840
  • 50% on income above €49,840

Only the portion of income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate, so a higher marginal rate never applies to your entire income.

Social contributions for the self-employed

Beyond income tax, an indépendant pays self-employed social contributions to the social insurance fund, calculated at roughly 20.5% of net professional income. These contributions fund pension, health insurance, family benefits and other coverage. An important point for your tax bill: the contributions are deductible, so they reduce the professional income on which income tax is then calculated.

In practice you pay provisional quarterly contributions during the year, which are later adjusted once your definitive income is known. Because the rate is applied to net income before tax, higher earnings raise both your contributions and your taxable base.

A worked example at €50,000 net income

Suppose your net professional income before contributions is €50,000. Social contributions at 20.5% come to about €10,250. Because they are deductible, your taxable income falls to roughly €39,750.

Income tax on €39,750 is calculated band by band:

  • 25% on the first €16,320 = €4,080
  • 40% on the next €12,480 (up to €28,800) = €4,992
  • 45% on the remaining €10,950 = €4,927.50

That gives income tax of about €13,999.50. Adding the €10,250 of contributions, your combined charge is roughly €24,250 before any municipal surcharge or personal allowances. Note that a municipal surcharge averaging around 7% of the income tax (about €980 here) is normally added on top and is not included in this base estimate.
